DC Academy is a private Christian school experience
coordinated by the Dream Center, Angelus Temple,
the Harbor House, and DC Teen Discipleship. The
primary purpose of the school was to provide a structured
and supervised environment for students in the DCTD
residential program to pursue their educational
goals.
Many of the DCTD students were behind in credits
and lacking in various learning skills. DC Academy,
using the curriculum provided by Alpha Omega, Switched-On
Schoolhouse, allows students to work at their own
individual level. The curriculum is challenging,
thorough and interactive. We weave into the computer-based
curriculum classes that aid in writing skills, physical
education and other courses that would benefit the
students.
We’ve seen the need to allow non-residential
students to attend our school and escape the temptations
and secular philosophies of the public school system.
In response to this need, we’ve decided to
open our school to selected students in the neighborhood
as well as to students who have graduated the DCTD
program and are making a transition back into their
communities.
We’re always looking to improve the services
we provide and look forward to working with you
to educate and raise your children. Please contact
us if we can be of further assistance.
Mission Statement
DC Academy is a private, Christian
secondary school that provides a safe, drug-free,
alternative learning environment for 6th –
12th grade students in Los Angeles wherein students
receive a quality, content-driven education that
combines high academic and moral standards, individualized
instruction and a Biblical worldview.
Educational Philosophy
The following points highlight our educational philosophy:
- All children should be educated in a safe, disciplined
and orderly environment. Students should be allowed
to learn in an environment free from drugs, gangs,
sexual harassment, chaos, bullying, and intimidation.
- A quality education should be available to all
children regardless of race, creed, nationality,
gender, religion, family situation, or socio-economic
status.
- Education is the process of equipping a learner
for life. Education is not merely the acquisition
of information, but rather the training and equipping
of an individual to live life successfully and become
a contributor to society.
- The spiritual emphasis of an individual’s
life cannot be ignored by the educational establishment.
We are as concerned with a child’s spiritual
development as his or her academic development.
Education involves the whole child, including spiritual
development. Adherence to Biblical values and the
support of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ
are cornerstones of DC Academy.
- Teaching is the equipping and training of students
and is best accomplished with individualized attention.
Although group learning is appropriate and beneficial
at times, most students learn best when working
at their own pace, at their own level and with appropriate
individualized attention and educational planning.
- A teacher’s responsibility lies in treating
each individual student with honor and dignity,
creating an environment suitable for learning, motivating
students to realize their dreams, and providing
new strategies for students to accomplish their
objectives. The teacher is not the center of the
educational endeavor but an integral part in the
educational process.
- Each student is an individual endowed with unique
gifts, talents, personality, and abilities so that
he or she can benefit others in society.
- The student is responsible for his or her learning.
No one can force a student to learn, nor can a student
be forced to be equipped. Students must participate
in the process. The student must be prepared to
invest in his or her education.
- Education is the God-given responsibility of
the parents. The Bible does not give educational
responsibility to the schools, nor to the governments.
Responsibility is given to parents. God will hold
parents responsible for the education of their children.
DC Academy assists parents in the process, but does
not abdicate that responsibility from the family.
- God’s plan is that children are to be placed
within the guiding context of a loving family. God
designed the family to be a safe environment where
children are free and able to grow and develop.
Where families have been torn apart or do not fit
God’s design of one father and one mother,
it is the responsibility of the local church body
to step in and meet the needs.
- There is a commitment to mastery learning of
a standard content so that students need to reach
a minimum standard before they are allowed to continue.
Mastery learning assumes that there is a base level
of knowledge. This knowledge is necessary in order
to be successful in subsequent material. Each student
has to achieve the same minimum. This approach improves
the achievement of everyone, means that equivalent
grades have equivalent meaning in terms of material
learned, and allows students to develop a shared
cultural literacy.
