| Turning High School Dropouts into High School Graduates: Dream Center GED Program
Students who receive Fs on their report cards and do not concentrate in the classroom may feel inadequate to succeed in school, and give up trying. Many drop out of high school, or they get expelled. These students are not stupid, but simply need extra motivation to persevere in their academic studies. Teens and adults who live in the inner city of Los Angeles will have another opportunity to receive their high school diploma through the GED program at the Dream Center.
For the past two years, The Dream Center has helped to restore the confidence and potential of many individuals through the GED, or General Education Development, program. Petrena Trice, who is known as Mama Trice to her students, saw the need for individuals in the Rampart area of Los Angeles to be encouraged to graduate from high school. People judge those who live in impoverished communities before they can prove to be successful.
When someone drops out of school, it is not only because he believes that he is a failure, but also because he oftentimes does not have the support of others to encourage him along the way. He may think that he does not need to pursue higher education because he does not have dreams and aspirations for his future. Through one-on-one attention, the Dream Center GED staff picks up where this student leaves off in the scholastic system, and guides him to move forward into the unique desires and calling for his life.
In addition to those living in the local Los Angeles area, many who reside at the Dream Center, including graduates of the discipleship program, ministry volunteers, and family floor residents have taken advantage of the opportunity to finish high school. Upon completion of the Dream Center GED curriculum and passing the GED exam, students receive the State of California High School Equivalency Certificate, which many assumed that they could not obtain. Thanks to the Dream Center GED curriculum, many more people will have the honor of graduating from high school, which is a special accomplishment.
