Eye Care and Eyewear to Show They Care

Being able to see properly is something we sometimes take for granted. We go through the day working and living our lives, but for some of us, doing what we do every day is a struggle because reading is a struggle, seeing is a struggle and succeeding becomes a struggle.

A while back, a talented woman named Dr. Melanie Hamiel came to the Dream Center’s Mobile Clinic and gave free eye exams. She checked the health of the eyes and checked to see who needed glasses. She saw close to one hundred people during that visit. About half of those she saw were given the gift of sight yesterday.

Dr. Hamiel, LensCrafters and OneSight, an organization that Dr. Hamiel works with that is dedicated to bringing sight to the world, all teamed together to help our men and women in Discipleship. OneSight believes that everyone has the right to have good vision and they fight to give the gift of sight to everyone they can.

This organization works with other charitable organizations to provide free optic care and eyeglasses to people who could not otherwise afford it. Over 250 million people suffer from vision issues and OneSight, has been able to help more than seven million of those people! In our country, where fourteen million adults have visual impairments, five million cannot afford eye care or eyewear. That was the case for many of our Disciples.

William Stout was one of the Disciples who was very blessed to receive the gift of sight. In the Discipleship Program, Disciples spend 35%-50% of their day studying, so it’s always quite difficult for someone who cannot see properly to complete their assignments. William has never been able to afford glasses but now can see clearly and will no longer have problems studying.

Jacob has been wearing contacts daily for months upon months. Not only that, but they weren’t even the correct prescription. Someone even gave him broken glasses with bifocals, but he still had trouble seeing. After visiting LensCrafters, his problems were solved and he walked away with a perfect prescription!

One of the Disciples remarked that it was great that volunteers were helping volunteers and they felt it was such a blessing. Dr. Hamiel was so excited to help out. She attends Angelus Temple and is a part of Red Eye and has fallen in love with the Dream Center. “I feel like they’re all family,” she said, “and I’m more than happy to help out.” Dr. Hamiel feels blessed to be able to provide this amazing gift to those at the Dream Center. The enormous smiles on the faces of the Disciples proved their gratitude for this timely gift.
