Piecing Together Broken Families: An Afternoon with Project Prevention

On Friday July 31st, the Project Prevention ministry visited several families in the Rampart and South Central areas of Los Angeles. Thirteen Dream Missions volunteers helped to fill up bins with an array of food and bags with toiletries to take to these mothers and their children. Some of these households had already begun to run out of food, and Project Prevention showed up right on time.

After loading the groceries and hygiene products onto the truck, Project Prevention and Dream Missions helpers went to a local parking lot to meet with Veronica, whose family has been helped by the Dream Center for a long time now. Underneath the blistering sun, Veronica shares her testimony with those who came to give her food, sharing with them how much Project Prevention has helped her family, especially after difficult situations that they have experienced.

Soon, the truck was back on the road, headed to South Central, where they would visit six more families that had been through the foster care system. Nola’s family has received care from this ministry for less than a month now. Depending on their legal situations, families can stay connected with Project Prevention for six months or over a year. Kelly and her husband, for example, have been involved for a while now, being helped with not only food and basic necessities, but also with regaining custody of their children.

Marniqua was also visited on that Friday afternoon. A little girl opened the door to let the Dream Missions team into the house. Her mommy was busy cleaning when the team arrived, apologizing that she couldn’t give the volunteers a hug because she was perspiring. Marniqua’s children, three girls and one boy, stood by the dining room table, observing the guests who had come into their home with pounds of food and diapers. One Project Prevention leader was delighted to see the renovation of this family’s home, knowing that if it were unkempt, Marniqua would run the risk of getting her children taken away from her.

One family expressed that they would not have had food that week if Project Prevention did not show up. This ministry makes it possible for mothers to properly take care of their children, and also provides furniture for them to transform their houses into homes.
